About Us

Learn About the Yukon Quest Alaska

The Yukon Quest Alaska is non profit dedicated to keeping the tradition of long distance mushing alive by hosting long distance races, showcasing the power and endurance of the Alaska sled dogs, the men and women who run them, and celebrating the historic trails teams have traveled since the days of the gold rush. Mushers and their teams will cover hundreds of miles over difficult terrain in arctic conditions. It is a true test of a persons skill, stamina, and dog care. The Yukon Quest is known for excellence in canine care and fostering the traditions of northern travel by dog sled.

Teams maybe traveling solo on the trail, but they are met at every checkpoint by a small army of dedicated veterinarians, officials, and volunteers all dedicated to making sure these teams are cared for and supported on their Quest. The race is held annually the first Saturday of February. Join us in Fairbanks for all the festivities, or follow along online.

The Yukon Quest Alaska, is the Alaskan side of the historic 1000 mile Yukon Quest. Although we are not currently running an international race, there is a rich tradition and history we are very proud of. For folks wanting to learn more about the 1000 mile Yukon Quest, read more here… While we are all hopeful the 1000 mile race can be rebuilt, till then we will continue to host distance events and keep the tradition alive.

Lisa Nilson

Executive Director

Lisa, a third-generation Fairbanks, Alaskan, brings a wealth of experience in fundraising, event planning, and management to the position. She came on board in August 2023 to work on her first YQA race. “I am so thankful for the opportunity to support such an important event in Fairbanks history, as well as the mushing and Fairbanks community,” said Lisa. “I am excited to help grow the Yukon Quest Alaska into the premier sled dog race in interior Alaska”.

Barbara Gravelin

Store, Sales, and Events Manager

Barb became a volunteer way back in 1992 through the end of 1995 when the US Army rotated her and her husband out of Alaska. Coming back to Alaska in 2005 she volunteered again until 2010 when she retired from the Army and became an employee!

Cate Alexander

Race Manager

Cate fell in love with dog mushing as a small child when she picked up a book about Balto, but it wasn't until she moved to Alaska in 2011 that she finally got to see the dogs in action. She began volunteering with the Yukon Quest in 2019 out at the Circle checkpoint, and loved the work so much she returned year after year. Her full-time job in remote logistics with Horst Expediting and Remote Operations was excellent preparation to take over as the race manager for the 2023 race. Looking forward to the future, Cate is excited to get the race back to Eagle and beyond.
